Lady Ruby: a new mascot for Chard

Artist: Megan Clark-Bagnall
With: Community groups across Chard

Over the course of spring 2026, artist Megan Clark-Bagnall visited different community groups in Chard: Craft & Sewing Repair groups at Chard Community Hub, Young Parents group at Forefront, Midweek Roast at Communitea Waffle House, and Toddler Bounce at Chard Library. In each place, people talked with Megan about all the ‘pockets’ of joy and community activity around the town. We wondered how these groups could be connected and celebrated. This led to the idea of an outfit covered in real pockets, each containing objects representing the different community groups.

The mascot costume was made by Svitlana Semashko, the head by Kelly Jago, and each pocket was filled with ‘treasure’ from the groups Megan visited.

Why a bright pink beaver?
Beavers are native to Chard. They’re incredibly useful creatures, working collaboratively to maintain wetlands. The colour and sparkle is inspired by the myth that the Crown Jewels were held secretly in Chard during World War Two

Positivity Parade
Lady Ruby was launched into the world with a parade from the Guildhall to the Museum on Saturday 28th March 2026. Local people added their own placards with messages celebrating things they love about Chard.
